In a lot of couples, one person ends up holding the whole wedding in their head: the deadlines, the follow-ups, the “did anyone reply to the florist?” It’s tiring, and it’s rarely what either of you intended.
Here’s how to share the planning fairly, and how to make it clear who’s doing what.

Split by ownership, not by task
Splitting individual jobs (“you email the DJ, I’ll pay the deposit”) still leaves one person keeping track of everything. It works better when each of you owns whole areas, from research to booking to paying, so the other doesn’t have to think about them.
A split that works for many couples:
- One of you: venue and catering, the budget, legal paperwork.
- The other: photography, music, the guest list and invitations.
- Together: the big decisions, such as the date, the budget total, the guest list cut-off and the ceremony.
Play to your strengths, and to who has more time in which months. If one of you has a busy period at work, front-load their tasks or swap areas for a while.
Keep the split visible
- Write it down. Who owns what should be on the checklist, not in someone’s memory.
- Check in weekly. Ten minutes on a Sunday: what’s done, what’s next, and anything you need to decide together.
- Hand over properly. If a task changes hands, pass on the context too: the quote, the contact, what was agreed.
- Share the boring jobs. Chasing RSVPs and paying balances are nobody’s favourite. Split them evenly.
Assign tasks in Your Wedding HQ
Planning together in Your Wedding HQ is free: invite your partner from Settings → Plan together and you both get full access to the same plan. Wedding HQ Pro adds assigning tasks, so the split is part of the checklist.

- On the Checklist tab, set who each task is for: one of you, or both of you. Change it any time from the name on the task.
- When you add a task, choose who it’s for as you add it.
- Choose Assigned to me to see your own tasks plus the ones you share. The top of the checklist shows how many are still to do for you.
Every task in the starter checklist begins with whoever set up the plan, so your first job is to share them out. Working through it together, timeframe by timeframe, is a good first planning date.
